Top 3 Favorite Albums
I was recently listening to ESPNRadio and they were talking about the 25th anniversary of the release of the "Thriller" album. Yeah - I had it ... a LONG time ago.
Anyway, they went on to expand the thought and began talking about their top 3 albums of the last 25 years - since 1982. There were some great ones in this stretch and the commentators had some great idea. So, I've been thinking about it for a little while and here's my list:
Appetite for Destruction - Guns 'n Roses
Shake Your Money Maker - The Black Crowes
Ten - Pearl Jam
This isn't the definitive list - it's my list. Each of these albums came at a different time in my life and I can still listen to each of them from start to finish.
A Review – “It Never Rains in Tiger Stadium”
Ever since I heard this book was coming out, I could not wait to get my hands on it and see what John Ed Bradley had to say. I'm from Louisiana and there are two universal truths about being from that state. One, you are going to be sociable and interesting. Two, the state revolves around L.S.U. - especially L.S.U. football.
John Ed was a center for the Tigers when I was in grade school. While, I don't remember him as a player, I vividly remember his peers. They were all folk heroes, legends and celebrities in a compartmentalized culture that reveled in their being. John Ed talks about his childhood in Louisiana in much the same way mine existed - we all pretended to be Tigers in our backyards, schoolyards and pee-wee football teams. To be an L.S.U. football player represented an epic accomplishment to kids growing up there. I'm quite sure it's the same in many of the different cultures across the country.
This book has needed to be written for a long time. But it could not have been written by anyone other that someone like John Ed who had been there and and experienced that life in that limelight. John Ed has put to words what so many who have played a game and have been successful at that game feel. I would expand that to include anyone who has been accomplished at anything - be it business, personal, sports or anything else.
Leadership is Not About Control, It’s About Influence
No truer words have been spoken: Leadership: Control vs. Influence.
What they are really saying is, “If I could control these people, I could guarantee the results.” The truth is that control is an illusion. You can’t control anyone, even the people that report to you.
People who lack confidence in their abilities usually overcompensate by over-controlling situations. People with confidence in their abilities and mission ask people to follow them by leading by example and inspiring those they lead to follow. It's a very delicate line and one that had profound impact. Control only lasts for so long and soon wears out its ability to impact the whole. However, influence is infectious and permeates the whole.

Remember When You Could Do This All Day?
I spent some time on the water over the Labor Day weekend and got a chance to do a little water skiing. I forgot how much exercise it was. When I was a kid in Louisiana, we'd spent a ton of time on Lake Bruin in the summer and I could ski all day - of course I was a few pounds lighter.

I skied about 2 months ago and was sore for a week. It was a great motivator to get in the gym and start working out again. Sure enough it paid off. I was just a little sore on Tuesday morning. Now I just need to work the cardio so I can stay up a little longer.
